"Days of Silver Rails & Golden Dreams" gets front page coverage in the Fort Payne Times-Journal newspaper!
This article ran in yesterday's edition of the Times-Journal. This story came about due to a press release and a flyer with an image of the painting that I sent to the editor a few weeks ago. My thanks to Managing Editor Jared Felkins & reporter Lindsay Slater for this coverage of my work! Needless to say, as an artist, I am very grateful for the exposure!

I present Steve Freer - the Director of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum - with a complimentary copy of "Days of Silver Rails & Golden Dreams" !
Last February, when I was first doing my research on this project, I drove up to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum to shoot reference pictures of their rolling stock & locomotives. When I arrived at Steve Freer's office without an appointment, he kindly listened to my request & graciously granted me access to rove freely about the TVRM's facilities & exhibits to shoot as many reference photos as I needed. Without the kind cooperation of Steve & the TVRM staff my efforts to bring this work to fruition would have been much more difficult! With my open edition print series now available, I thought it appropriate that I present him with a copy as a small token of thanks!

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum is a one-of-a-kind non-profit organization that is more than a stuffy, dusty collection of exhibits. It is a operational local, short-line railroad equiped with authentic steam & diesel-electric locomotives that routinely pull fully restored passenger trains between Grand Junction Station & East Chattanooga Depot! TVRM also conducts excursion train trips through the lovely Hiwassee River Gorge! To learn more, visit the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's website by clicking HERE .

The A.S.A.A. Annual Forum took place earlier this month from June 7th through the 12th & Estelle and I flew out to San Diego to participate. We are pictured below with with fellow attendees Stan & Cheryl Vosburg on the flight deck of the USS Midway during our tour of the ship, which is now a floating museum in San Diego Bay. This was but one of the many activities that we were able to enjoy during the Forum. To see more, click HERE .

The Grand Opening of the Korean War Jets Exhibit at the Southern Museum of
Flight!
Last Friday, March 5th, I had the great pleasure to attend the grand opening of the Korean War Jets Exhibit at the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, Alabama. This exhibit highlights the defection of Lieutenant No-Kum-Sok, the North Korean pilot who delivered an example of the rare and illusive Mig-15 into the hands of the United States military.

Former North Korean pilot Kenneth Rowe (Lt. No-Kum-Sok), F-86 Sabre pilot & Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame member John Lowery, Tom Feltman - the first airman to arrive on the scene at the time of Rowe's landing - and Korean War Jet Ace General Charles Cleveland, and a host of other Korean War veterans were in attendance. Famed Tuskegee Airman Ace Lt. Colonel Lee A. Archer passes away at
at the age of 90.
It was with sadness that I received news from a friend in the Atlanta chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen of the passing of Lt. Colonel Lee Archer. The news has left me regretful that I never pressed getting an opportunity to meet this great man. I did, however, gain enormous respect for him, and all of his fellow Tuskegee Airmen, when I had the opportunity to paint "The Gruesome Twosome" for Accurate miniatures in 2008. My research for that project revealed a great deal about Colonel Archer that I had not previously read or heard about.

Born in Yonkers on September 6, 1919, and raised in Harlem, he left New York University to enlist in the Army Air Corps in 1941, and initially he was rejected for pilot training at that time because he was black. But when the segregated pilot training program at Tuskegee, Alabama was opened, Archer applied, was accepted and received his wings in July 1943. He and his flying partner & leadman, Captain Wendell Pruitt, became known as "The Gruesome Twosome" while serving in the 302nd Fighter Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group, operating out of southern Italy. Archer and Pruitt were the most successful Leadman / Wingman team of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, and Archer became their only "Ace" with five confirmed air-to-air kills. He was also credited with an additional six enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground. He remained in the Army Air Corps after World War II and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

After retiring from the military in 1970, Archer joined General Foods Corporation, becoming one of the few black corporate vice presidents of a major American company in that time. Later, he became a venture capitalist running North Street Capital Group, a small-business investment firm, and after retiring from General Foods in 1987, he founded his own venture capital firm, Archer Asset Management. He is pictured below in a photo during one of his many public appearances.

Introducing "Southern Pride" to the public at the Fort Payne Depot
Museum!
Pictured below with me is my host, Museum Curator Ann Houston, at the unveiling of "Southern Pride" at the Fort Payne Depot this past Wednesday afternoon. On display in front of us are the smaller original painting and one of the larger prints. I also exhibited "Mountain Lake Monarch" and my portrait "Kathryn" , along with a small sampling of my other prints. The event was well attended; I managed to sell the original and a bunch of prints. My thanks to Ann Houston for hosting this viewing, and my thanks to the editors & staff of The Times-Journal and The DeKalb Advertiser for their coverage of this event! Now it is time to get started in earnest on the companion art for the second print in the depot series!
