I'm pleased to announce that The Blue Heron, (16" x 12", oil on panel) has been selected for inclusion in the The Wonders of Alabama Art 2012 sponsored by the Energen Corporation!
I just received notification over this past weekend that The Blue Heron was selected by the jurors for the 13th Annual Energen Art Competition. The show will be held 12 March, 2012 through 25 March, 2012 at Energen Plaza, 605 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd in Birmingham, Alabama. There will be a closing reception & awards ceremony 2pm to 4pm on 25 March to recognize the artists. Needless to say, I'm quite happy & honored to see this work accepted into this show!!

Desoto Falls, 24" x 16.25", mixed media on Bristol board - my current work-in-progress!
It has been a while since my last post on my "Desoto Falls" work-in-progress, so I thought I'd get you all caught up. In this new image you may now see where I've rendered the falling water coming over the dam & the reflections on the river's surface behind it! As I post this, I am busy rendering the surrounding forest. As soon as I have all those penciled in, then we'll be ready to start adding color!!

Please feel free to comment via the e-mail link below; as always, I look forward to your feedback!

Desoto Falls, 24" x 16.25", mixed media on Bristol board - my current work-in-progress!
Made some more progress on the upper part of the falls on my "Desoto Falls" work-in-progress. Here you may see where I've gotten the adjacent rock formations added, and the falling water up to the bottom of the dam!

Desoto Falls, 24" x 16.25", mixed media on Bristol board - my latest work-in-progress!
Pictured below is my latest on rendering "Desoto Falls" . Since my last post I've managed to complete my graphite rendering of the bluff. Now, using an artist's stump to apply & maniplulate the graphite, followed with the use of a kneadable eraser as a positive drawing tool, I've managed to model the apprearance of the falling water as it spills over the lip of the bluff & crashes into the pool below!

At the time of this post I'm busy working on the upper falls, so I'll show you my progress on that next time!

Today I have two announcements to make:
NUMBER 1: The Fort Payne Times-Journal ran an article earlier this week about the inclusion of "Itinerant Fliers" in the upcoming 18th Annual Horizons of Flight Aviation Art Exhibition to be held at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, Texas and made mention of the inclusion of "Friday Harbor Soliloquy" in the Gadsden Art Association's first ever annual juried show fund raiser calender!
My thanks to Managing Editor Jared Felkins & his staff at the Times-Journal for this great coverage of my work!

NUMBER 2: My friend & watercolorist Carrie Roets-Waller has posted an interview about me & my aviation art in her "Friday Feature" on her blogspot! She has posted a great series of images of my work there with links to my website. Carrie is a wonderfully talented lady whose work is simply wonderful to behold. When you navigate the link below to see the interview, be sure to linger & take a look at Carrie's art! Her renderings of glass Mason jars in watercolor are particularly astounding!!
Thank you Carrie for asking me to participate in the interview; I really appreciate this great coverage of my work!

Desoto Falls, 24" x 16.25", mixed media on Bristol board - my latest work-in-progress!
Pictured below is my progress since my last post on rendering the bluff on "Desoto Falls" . I have been painstakingly working away at making random strokes & scribbles of pencil graphite turn into the solid forms that make up an honest & accurate rendering of this mystical & scenic place!

This image depicts only the lower one-third of the painting comprising the main falls & the bluff face. As I stated in my earlier blog post, this graphite rendering is going to be an "underpainting" that establishes placement of detail & values so I may apply color over it with airbrushed acrylics! After I've gotten the falls & bluff done in pencil, I'll turn my attention to roughing in the trees around & above the falls, as well as those in the distance.
